Staff Picks: Scary Movies

We asked our staff what their favourite scary movies are.

Scary movies are a perfect way to celebrate Halloween subtly. If you need a unique list of scary movies, look no further, we asked our staff what their favourite scary movie was, and their answers have left us with the perfect list of the old school, new school, classic and absolutely out-the-gate. In no particular order, here are what our staff are watching this Halloween.

1. Babadook (2014)

Australian psychological horror film. Babadook is based on Kent's 2005 short film Monster, which follows a single mother who must confront her son's fear of a monster in their home.

2. Sinister (2012)

American supernatural horror film, directed by Scott Derrickson. Sinister is about a struggling true-crime writer whose discovery of videos depicting grisly murders in his new house puts his family in danger.

3. Bug (2006)

Psychological thriller film directed by William Friedkin. At a rundown desert motel, a tentative relationship forms. The military deliberately infected one of the pair with a bug shown crawling under their skin, and paranoia begins to envelop the desperate pair.

4. It Follows (2014)

American supernatural psychological horror film directed by David Robert Mitchell. After carefree teenager Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh, for the first time, she learns she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Jay knows that death will inexorably creep toward her as either a friend or a stranger.

5. Scream (2022)

American slasher film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Wes Craven re-invented and revitalised the slasher-horror genre with this modern horror classic, which manages to be funny, clever and scary, as a fright-masked knife maniac stalks high-school students in middle-class suburbia.

6. Alien (1979)
A science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon. In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. The terror begins when the crew encounters a nest of eggs inside the alien ship.

7. Pet Sematary (2019)

American supernatural horror film directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer and written by Jeff Buhler from a screen story by Matt Greenberg. Doctor Louis Creed moves his family to Maine. After the Creeds' cat is accidentally killed, Louis chooses to bury it in the ground near the old pet cemetery. The cat returns to life, and its personality changes for the worse.


8. The Wicker Man (1973)

British folk horror film directed by Robin Hardy. Howie travels to Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. He discovers the locals are weird and unhelpful and becomes determined to get to the bottom of the disappearance.

9. Color Out of Space (2019)

American science fiction Lovecraftian horror film directed and co-written by Richard Stanley. After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism that infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.


10. The Thing 1982

American science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter from a screenplay by Bill Lancaster. In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims.


11. Insidious (2010)

Supernatural horror film directed by James Wan, and written by Leigh Whannell. Parents take drastic measures when it seems their new home is haunted and a malevolent entity possesses their comatose son.
